Israeli night curfews come into effect in 40 cities
(8 Sep 2020) Overnight curfews on some 40 Israeli cities and towns hit hardest by the coronavirus went into effect Tuesday night.
The curfew started at 7pm (1600GMT) lasting until 5am (0200GMT) each morning.
The measure is expected to remain in place for a week.
During the curfew, people will not be allowed to venture more than 500 meters from their homes, and nonessential businesses will have to close.
The Israeli government has been forced to take action after failing to contain an outbreak with record levels of new infections.
The measures were supposed to start Monday, but were postponed in order to "consult" with the respective cities, said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Israel had earned praise last spring for its early handling of the virus, moving quickly to seal the country's borders and appearing to bring the outbreak under control.
But Netanyahu has come under criticism for reopening the economy too quickly in May.
Since then, the number of new cases has spiked.
Overall, Israel has recorded more than 133,000 cases of the virus, with more than 26,000 still active.
It recently has been reporting some 3,000 new cases each day.
Israel's total coronavirus death toll has exceeded 1,000.
