Hong Kong pro-democracy lawmakers all resign, leaving just PRC ‘patriots’

All of Hong Kong's pro-democracy legislators have announced they are resigning in protest against a decision by the city's government to disqualify four of their colleagues.

Kwok Ka-ki, Alvin Yeung, Dennis Kwok and Kenneth Leung were ousted after Beijing passed a resolution enabling the city’s executive to banish legislators who support Hong Kong's independence or refused to acknowledge China's sovereignty.

Chief Executive Carrie Lam defended the decision – reminding legislators they serve two masters: Hong Kong and China.

“From now on, every lawmaker who enters such an important legislature must shoulder their responsibility of supporting the basic law of the Hong Kong special administrative region and being loyal to the People’s Republic of China so that we are able to found a political system dominated by patriots,” she said.

British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab described the law as a “further assault” on Hong Kong’s “high degree of autonomy and freedoms”.
