Sorry for the image quality, I realized later my iPhone had a smudge on the camera lens, but this should be good enough to watch me go through the diagnostics.

I hope you find this information useful for base lining a GE HPWH or if needed for troubleshooting the unit after a failure. The earlier First generation of the GE HPWH had a completely different user interface with heat pump components assembled in China. From online reports these seem to have many issues. This Unit in the video was manufactured in June 2014 and was purchased through Lowes. The entire system is manufactured in the USA and so far these USA manufactured units have a far better reputation.

How to enter diagnostics and the different inputs you can observe and outputs you can activate. I will provide a link soon for a PDF of the service manual that is located internally for the service technician.
Hold [ENTER] and [/\] up arrow at the same time to enter diagnostics mode.
You will see T2 and the temperature being sensed by thermistor T2. (in C or F depending on the setting)
T2 = Tank (Water) Temperature
T3a = Evaporator Inlet Temperature
T3b = Evaporator outlet temperature
T4 = Compressor Discharge Temperature
T5 = Ambient Air Temperature

Push Mode button to change from Heat Pump to Hybrid mode (Diagnostic Mode: Heating Status and Control) and this is where you can switch on and off the Lower and Upper resistance elements as well as turn the compressor on and off.

LE0 = Lower Element is Off (Push Enter to cycle the Lower Element ON)
LE1 = Lower Element is ON (Push Enter to cycle the Lower Element OFF)

Push MODE button to select "High Demand" (Diagnostic Mode: View Faults and Counters)
If "---" is displayed there are no faults identified by the controller.

3 Ways to exit Diagnostics:
1) Hold the [/\] UP and [\/] Down arrows at the same time for several second until you hear a beep.
2) Wait for diagnostics mode to time out and go back to normal operation after 15 minutes of no activity.
3) Turn off the power to the water heater wait 5 seconds and turn it back on.

Please see this document for Service details relating to the GE HPWH. A friend took a picture and I made a PDF out of it. It is of the front and back of the service technician paper found in an envelope behind the control panel inside the unit.

This HPWH is installed in a basement of a Subway Restaurant and has provided all the necessary domestic hot water for the subway while reducing humidity and temperature in the basement where the condensing units for the walk in freezer and cooler (refrigerator). Customer has had this installed since September of 2014 and is very happy with the the dehumidification and cost savings provided by this unit. The customer used to spend over $500 every 4 months to use a tank style 40 gallon propane water heater. The customer has not noticed any significant increase in the electric usage and is saving almost $1500 a year in propane costs. While running in heat pump mode after an hour I measured the current draw of 2.6 Amps at 240 VAC which is approximately 624 watts.
