Qualifications and Employment as a Professional Jeweller
Check out the new Diamond Mounter merch!
https://cbilton.creator-spring.com Did you study jewellery full time in college? You completed beginners, intermediate and then advanced courses? Achieving top grades in every exam you took and after a few years you proudly boast of having degrees in practical jewellery and jewellery design?... Let me tell you something; somebody that worked full time in a jewellers workshop for the same amount of time you were in college knows farrr more making jewellery than you! That person not only has a greater ability than you at making things but also knows about making things under pressure of time restraints, making things that absolutely have to done perfectly and have ability to create them in many different styles, working in all variations of precious metals and sweating while handling other peoples gemstones that cost as much and often more than they earn in a year! Also just working around other people feeling the same pressure can be stressful. These are not negative situations, these experiences are all very powerful lessons in becoming a great jeweller.
That person will also have gained valuable insight to the workings of business which will be beneficial if they decide to create their own later on. There are no disagreeable customers at college!
I say this confidently as part of my apprenticeship i did a day release course. Meaning once a week I went to college London and was around full time college students there. There was a huge difference in ability between the day release students and the full time students. Something that all professional jewellers I have met and worked with over my entire career have agreed with.
In this video I talk about your achievements while in education may not be as worthwhile as you may hope and as I talk about my own experiences as an up and coming professional jeweller I give advice about how to present yourself to a potential new employer.
The channel has potential to grow in to a great archive of jewellers knowledge with your help.
With patrons support I will be able to offer far more information than I am currently able to.
With over 2 decades of knowledge gained in the jewellery trade working with some of the best diamond mounters in the UK I can train practitioners of jewellery making, up to and far beyond the skill level found in High Street jewellers workshops.
I have been lucky enough to have been taught by actual Bond Street shop model makers and my ambition is to share what I have learned through out my career to as many people as possible.
My vehicle to do this is the Diamond Mounter YouTube channel and now after nearly 1 year of uploading video guides, its time to take it up a level.
My ambition is to be able to make instructional videos with not just silver, but gold and platinum also. Some proper jewellers soldering equipment will enable me to create much more special pieces too! This will open up a whole new world of information I have to share.
There are many specific methods and techniques used for the different precious metals and knowledge about gemstones I can teach that will never enter my videos unless I am actually working with them.
