A patron asks: "I've been hearing two differing narratives about the effects of the New Deal and wanted to ask this question for clarification: what does the evidence say about the effect of the New Deal on the Great Depression? The two narratives are that 1) it helped bring the country out of the depression and 2) it actually either prolonged the depression or even caused it. I see #2 coming from small government/libertarian conservatives as if it's gospel, but is it true or is it a revision of economic history? Has there always been these two competing narratives about the effect of the New Deal or is it a relatively recent thing to suggest it was a raw deal, not a new deal?"
