Well we obviously don't have any recorded material of that or later periods so we can only guess what those masters really meant by their Works.
That period is famous for Drama in Opera rather then later virtuoso styles of Baroque and Belcanto where voice technique/fast passages changed opera from Drama to actualy concerts with costumes.
