On Artemis, with Spyridon Rangos | Ancient Greece Revisited

In mythology, whenever we encounter the image of a "nature goddess," she is usually associated with the earth in a motherly way: she is the fruit-bearing earth that brings forth life out of her bosom, and the dark mother that takes life back when the time comes. But the Greeks imagined a different nature, and personified it with a goddess. She was the lofty spirit of wild nature, the shimmering mistress of the sacred groves, the huntress who brought death when she drew her golden bow, the queen of solitude who brought delight, yet, could not love herself, and yet, just like nature, always trembling in excitement and lightning beauty: she was Artemis.
