In the final days of the Edo period, a once-fearsome and respected swordsman has fallen on hard times, living as a ronin. Desperate for work, he reluctantly accepts a job: to kill a cat. This supposed demon cat is said to possess a magical charm that makes its owner completely infatuated. However, the encounter with this small creature brings unexpected changes to the ronin's life, transforming his bleak existence in vivid ways.
Tormented by fleas, Kyutaro leaves his house and encounters Giichi, the man he recently saved. Giichi advises him to take care of the fleas with "shamon" and introduces him to "Nekomiya," a mysterious cat shop. Seeking the elusive "shamon," Kyutaro takes Tamanojo to the shop, where the sign boldly declares, "Leave everything about cats to us." The proprietress, Oshichi (Kaori Takahashi), brushes Tamanojo and corrects Kyutaro, saying it’s not "shamon" but "shabon" (soap), and hands him some soap, urging him to wash Tamanojo.

After returning to his flea-ridden longhouse with a still-flea-infested Tamanojo, Kyutaro is visited by Goro (Chikau Sato), a traveling medicine seller from his hometown. Goro often delivers letters from Kyutaro’s wife, Oshizu (Megumi Yokoyama), and daughter, Oharu. He advises Kyutaro to write a reply before he returns to their hometown the next day. Kyutaro stares at the unopened letters stored in his cabinet, recalling an incident from his past when he made Oharu cry...
