Aids to Navigation- Types of Lights and IALA Buoyage System

The IALA (International Association of Marine Aids to Navigation and Lighthouse Authorities) Maritime Buoyage System is a unified global framework used to guide mariners, mark hazards, and indicate safe channels. While the system is largely standardized, it is divided into two regions (Region A and Region B) which differ only in the colors used for lateral marks.

1. The Six Types of Marks

The system utilizes six distinct categories of buoys and beacons, each with unique colors, shapes, topmarks, and light rhythms.

Lateral Marks: Indicate the port (left) and starboard (right) sides of a navigable channel. Region A: (Europe, Africa, parts of Asia, Australia) Port is Red, Starboard is Green. Region B: (The Americas, Japan, Korea, Philippines) Port is Green, Starboard is Red.

Cardinal Marks: Indicate the side on which it is safe to pass a danger (North, South, East, or West). They are colored Black and Yellow and use distinct double-cone topmarks.

Isolated Danger Marks: Placed directly on or over a danger (like a wreck or rock) that has navigable water all around it. They are Black with Red horizontal bands and have two black spheres as a topmark.

Safe Water Marks: Indicate that there is navigable water all around the mark (e.g., mid-channel or landfall marks). They feature Red and White vertical stripes and a single red sphere topmark.

Special Marks: Indicate special areas or features (e.g., recreation zones, pipelines, or cables). They are entirely Yellow with an "X" topmark.

Emergency Wreck Marks: Introduced more recently to mark new, unchartered dangers. They have Blue and Yellow vertical stripes and a yellow cross topmark.

2. Common Types of Navigational Lights

Lights are described by their color, period (the time for one full cycle), and phase characteristic (the pattern of light and dark).

Light Fixed- continuous,

Flashing-The duration of light is shorter than the duration of darkness.

Occulting-The duration of light is longer than the duration of darkness.

Isophase-Light and dark durations are exactly equal.
Quick Flashing-Rapid flashes (usually 50–80 per minute), often used for Cardinal marks.

දිශානුගත සලකුණු (Cardinal Marks): අනතුරක් පවතින ස්ථානයක ආරක්ෂිතව ගමන් කළ හැකි දිශාව (උතුර, දකුණ, නැගෙනහිර හෝ බටහිර) පෙන්වයි. මේවා කහ සහ කළු වර්ණයෙන් යුක්තය.

හුදකලා අනතුරු සලකුණු (Isolated Danger Marks): හාත්පසින්ම ගැඹුරු ජලය ඇති ස්ථානයක පවතින කුඩා අනතුරක් (උදා: ගිලුණු නැවක් හෝ ගලක්) සලකුණු කරයි. වර්ණය: කළු සහ රතු තිරස් තීරු.

ආරක්ෂිත ජල සලකුණු (Safe Water Marks): මෙම සලකුණ අවට ජලය යාත්‍රා කිරීමට ආරක්ෂිත බව පෙන්වයි. වර්ණය: රතු සහ සුදු සිරස් තීරු.

විශේෂ සලකුණු (Special Marks): විනෝද කලාප, කේබල් එළා ඇති ස්ථාන වැනි විශේෂිත ප්‍රදේශ පෙන්වයි. වර්ණය: කහ.

හදිසි අනතුරු සලකුණු (Emergency Wreck Marks): අලුතින් සිදුවූ අනතුරක් සලකුණු කිරීමට යොදාගනී. වර්ණය: නිල් සහ කහ සිරස් තීරු.

2. නාවික ආලෝක සංඥා (Navigational Lights)
රාත්‍රී කාලයේදී මෙම සලකුණු හඳුනාගැනීම සඳහා විවිධ ආලෝක රටාවන් භාවිතා කරයි:

Fixed (F) - ස්ථාවර ආලෝකය: නොනන්වා එක දිගට දැල්වෙන ආලෝකය.

Flashing (Fl) - දැල්වී නිවෙන ආලෝකය: ආලෝකය පවතින කාලයට වඩා අඳුර පවතින කාලය වැඩිය.

Occulting (Oc): අඳුර පවතින කාලයට වඩා ආලෝකය පවතින කාලය වැඩිය.

Isophase (Iso) - සමකාලීන ආලෝකය: ආලෝකය පවතින කාලය සහ අඳුර පවතින කාලය හරියටම සමාන වේ.

Quick (Q) - වේගයෙන් දැල්වෙන ආලෝකය: විනාඩියකට 50-80 වාරයක් පමණ වේගයෙන් දැල්වී නිවෙයි.
