On April the 8th of 2020, teenager Janina Valenzuela was riding a bicycle at the Arbors of East Cobb apartments in Georgia, while her boyfriend was walking alongside her. They were heading towards a store in the area when they were approached by Brayan Rivas. The young man pulled a knife and threatened the couple. Valenzuela’s boyfriend used the bicycle to escape the attack, while the girl started running on foot. She went into the woods behind the apartment complex, where Rivas caught up to her. Valenzuela was reported missing before her body was later found in a creek. Rivas was arrested. At first, the teenager denied that he’d been responsible. While in jail, however, Rivas wrote a letter confessing to the murder of Valenzuela as part of an initiation rite. Rivas was indicted in January of 2021 on 12 felony counts. In 2023, he pleaded guilty, for which he was sentenced to life in prison without parole plus 20 years.
