China in 1871 — A Vanished World Captured on Camera
📸 This Is What China Looked Like 150 Years Ago — Almost Nothing Remains
🌏 Before Modern China — Rare 1871 Streets You'll Never See Again
Description:
The 1870s marked one of the earliest periods in which photography documented daily life in China, offering a rare and irreplaceable visual record of the Qing Dynasty era. At this time China was ruled by the Qing Emperor, and traditional courtyard architecture, open-air markets, and ancient city planning dominated every major settlement. Over the following decades, China endured the fall of the Qing Dynasty in 1912, Japanese invasion, civil war, and rapid industrialization under the People's Republic — each wave of change demolishing vast swaths of historic urban fabric. The mass demolition accelerated dramatically during the 20th century, particularly during the Cultural Revolution (1966–1976), when traditional structures were deliberately destroyed as symbols of old China. Today, less than a fraction of these architectural landscapes survive, making photographs like this extraordinarily valuable historical documents.
