Russia: Putin and Czech President Zeman meet on V-Day

Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed bilateral relations between Moscow and Prague during a meeting with his Czech counterpart Milos Zeman in Moscow, Saturday, on the 70th anniversary of the Soviet victory in World War II.

Vladimir Putin, President of Russia (Russian): "It is a pleasure to know that politicians who can express their point of view, defend it, and openly pursue an independent policy still exist in Europe."

Vladimir Putin, President of Russia (Russian): "You know that it was not us who initiated the cooling of our relations with Europe, but I hope that with the help of politicians like you, we will be able not only to recover them, but also to move them further."

Vladimir Putin, President of Russia (Russian): "I would like to thank you and all our friends in the Czech Republic who take care of the burial places of Soviet soldiers and officers. It is very important and a very sensitive issue for us which says a lot about how deep our relations are."

Milos Zeman, President of Czech Republic (Russian): "You know, policy is like the weather – it gets colder but also it gets warmer. People are happy when warmth comes after the cold. This is the first thing. And the second – I said in public several times that the main reason why I am here is to honour not only those who died in Czechoslovakia, but all 20 million, some people say it is 27 million, Soviet people, both soldiers and civilians, who died during the period of the Great Patriotic War."

Milos Zeman, President of Czech Republic (Russian): "As every president protects the interests of the homeland, I am here to protect the interests of the Czech Republic. I don’t want to be a Secretary General of the UN and to speak about the whole of the Earth."

Milos Zeman, President of Czech Republic (Russian): "I am completely sure that sanctions are a short-term thing, and I have already talked publicly against the sanctions."

Vladimir Putin, President of Russia (Russian): "We know."
