Yak is called the king of mountains of Gilgit-Baltistan, It is kept in the highland pastures for its tractability, tolerance to the harsh climate, and high-value products of meat, milk, butter, wool, hair, and hides.
Yaks live between 2000 and 5000 meters of altitude. These impressive mammals adapted to the Himalayan environment and can carry loads over 120kg and females give milk. Their long caravans allow the trade of many products in the most remote regions of the Himalayas. The number of domestic yaks is estimated at 12 million.

Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) is a very sparsely populated high-mountain area in the north of Pakistan. Its natural environment is usually described with superlatives – the longest glaciers outside of the polar region, home of the world’s second-highest peak (K2), and four more eight-thousanders. GB is largely a high-mountain desert; geologically, it spreads over three high mountain systems: Himalaya, Karakorum, and Hindukush.
