Asha ~ Little wolf

This is an improvised piano piece I played in 1988, which is now on my re-mastered instrumental debut album "Open Secret" from around that time. I could never play 'Little wolf' the same way again, as it was entirely spontaneous... an outpouring of feeling from mythical images in my spiritual imagination.

I had only just found an outlet for all this feeling, by gaining a record contract and finding a studio to record in, after years of rejections because my music had no recognisable genre to be marketed in... I started composing in earnest in 1979, in my 20's, after I awoke to Spirit, but was consistently told: "This'll never sell... what is it? It's not pop, rock, folk or anything anyone knows." The record deal I eventually got put it in the new-age category. I guess this piece could also be called neo-classical, or even ambient. I don't know... to me it was simply my true heart expression. I played this way as a 10 year-old! It was in my soul already... the result of work done in other incarnations. I played what I saw and felt in my spiritual imagination... nature, spirit, myth, Grail... other dimensions beyond our known world, where the Divine breath was in every breeze.

My fingers just knew how to manifest this on a piano, as a 'given'... I started playing from my heart aged 3. By the age of 8 I realised I knew how to play football, too, in the same improvised way. Those were my two gifts... music and football. I played football like I played music... as a fantasy, as Ruud Gullit once said it should be played!

Football... music! Music... football! I wanted to play for England!

Later in life I realised that they were not ends in themselves, but part of something bigger... part of an impulse to manifest something from beyond our known world. As a child it was football... as a man it is the Christ! Imagine if the Christ played for Chelsea... my home town team, in London! He would wear the number 7 shirt!

I filmed for this in Slovenia, by the sacred Lake Bohinj, up in the Julian Alps... just 5-10 kms from both Italy and Austria. A village there, Stara Fuzina, is my favourite village in the world. My wife and kids and I went there 3 times for family holidays... remote, peaceful, spiritual, elemental... an amazing place.

There is a legend that when God created the world he forgot the Slovenians, because they were so humble and unassuming! To atone for that he gave them HIS land... the most beautiful land he was reserving for Himself... and that is the sacred Lake Bohinj; God's lake. They have a mythical creature that roams the forests there... the Zlatorog, or golden deer. You can see his statue by the lake.

Filming in the snow, there were little deer that came right up to our guest house... the Pension Stare in Ukanc, at the other end of the lake from Stara Fuzina. Josef Stare runs this wonderful little family hotel (info@bohinj-hotel.com). In Stara Fuzina we ate every day in the Gostilna Mihovc (www.gostilna-mihovc.si), where Vesna served us vegetable Goulash. It's the only inn in town, but what a welcoming place, with the sweet smell of wood-smoke hanging in the misty, snowy, icicle sharp, pure alpine air... and the cheerful sound of Tyrolean yodelling songs, that we secretly referred to as 'German Sausage Music'!
