Vocals Delayed in Logic Pro? Fix Vocal Recording Latency

In this Logic Pro tutorial, I show you how to fix vocal recording latency, delayed vocal monitoring, and vocal timing problems when recording vocals into an existing Logic Pro session.

If you’ve ever recorded vocals in Logic Pro and your voice sounds late in your headphones, feels delayed while singing, or the vocal timing feels wrong against the track, this video walks through the main things to check.

I’m demonstrating this with vocals, but the same ideas can also help when recording guitar, bass, synths, microphones or any live input into Logic Pro.

Recording latency in Logic Pro can show up in a few different ways. Sometimes the vocal sounds delayed while you are recording. Sometimes the performance feels out of time because you are hearing yourself late in the headphones. Sometimes the recorded vocal timing seems slightly off against the music. And sometimes the issue is not your singing at all — it is buffer size, plugin latency, monitoring settings, the master bus, or a heavy Logic Pro project.

One important thing to understand is that people often use the word latency for two slightly different problems.

The first is monitoring latency. This is when your voice sounds delayed in your headphones while you are recording. That delay can make it really difficult to sing naturally, stay in time, or perform confidently.

The second is recorded timing. This is when the vocal appears to land early or late against the track after recording. If the vocal timing is consistently wrong after the take, that may need a different fix from simple headphone monitoring delay.

In this video I focus on the practical things that usually help when recording vocals into an existing Logic Pro project.

Low Latency Mode can help by reducing or bypassing plugins that add delay while recording. Direct monitoring can help because you hear your microphone directly from your audio interface instead of waiting for the signal to travel through Logic Pro. Audio settings such as buffer size can also make a big difference, especially when recording vocals into a large project with lots of tracks, plugins, buses and master processing.

I also show a final fallback method: if the project is too heavy and nothing else is working, bounce out only the parts you need to sing along to, start a fresh Logic Pro project, record your new vocal part there, then bring the recording back into the main project.

It’s not always the first thing to try, but it can save a session when vocal latency, timing problems, plugin delay or a heavy mix are getting in the way.
