Christopher Plummer was best known for his role as Captain Von Trapp in The Sound of Music but hated the film despite its success. He gave it the disparaging nickname The Sound of Mucus and longed for a more serious character part to play. Christopher flourished on stage, especially when playing a character created by the famous playwright William Shakespeare. He created his own small production in 1973 called Love and Madmen to celebrate the best Shakespeare love themes.
Even the glittering stages of Broadway and the West End were too small for a talent like Christopher Plummer’s. He began to earn film and television credits in the 1950s, and the lit of roles continued to grow until the date of his death. Christopher also showed a knack for voiceover work as well. Credits in this area included everything from the bitter Charles Muntz in Disney’s hit adventure film Up to narration of the children’s special Madeline.
Christopher’s extraordinary talent also earned him over 60 award nominations. He won almost half of them, including 2 Tonys, 2 Emmys, and the distinction of becoming the oldest actor to ever win a competitive Oscar. Throughout a 60-year career, he earned a massive fortune. He also found time to cultivate a family, including a daughter named Amanda and a 50-year marriage to actress and dancer Elaine Taylor.
