I am currently 24 years old, and I have been drinking coffee very regularly since the age of 17. Under the assumption that I’ve had a single cup of coffee every single day for the past 7 years (which is very conservative b/c i’m a bigggg 2 cups a day type of guy), I estimate that I’ve had 2,555 cups of coffee. Yes, I have a problem. That’s why I wanted to go without caffeine, coffee specifically, to see how I would react and whether I would feel true mental clarity like all of the people say you do.
I started drinking coffee during my senior year of high school because I had zero period (which meant that I had a class that started at 7am) so I drank it for a bit of an energy pick me up because I grew up always thinking that coffee would make you super wired and energetic because of all of the caffeine. Also, my dad is an avid coffee drinking so we had an espresso machine at home so accessing coffee was really easy.
I remember when that first splash of black coffee landed on my lips…I HATED IT. Honestly it was gross and I had to cut the bitterness with cream and sugar, but over time it got much tastier to eat and I actually now have my coffee black and, yes, I’m one of those obnoxious people that buys fancy coffee beans, grinds my own beans, and takes notes about the flavors that I tasted in the coffee. I know, I hate myself, too.
Month 1:
Honestly this wasn’t too different. I know tons of caffeine addicts talk about how they have major withdrawal symptoms like headaches, lethargy, etc, but in reality I never really felt any of that. To be honest the major difference that I felt on my day-to-day basis was not fatigue, but rather the fact that I became much less regular with pooping. There has always been something about that post-coffee poop that just hits different, and I really started to miss out on that. But that’s a separate video for a separate time.
But other than the lack of regular bowel movement my energy levels really did not feel that different. I definitely missed the sensation of having something warm in my hands in the morning and sipping on something other than water for the morning, but really my life did not change that drastically. Brewing a cup of coffee used to be my morning ritual signaling to my body that “my day is starting”, and by not drinking coffee I instead this “start of the day” signal with taking a longer shower, drinking a glass of water, or taking a slower breakfast.
Month 2:
Nothing Changed
Month 3:
Nothing Changed
In conclusion: drinking or not drinking coffee is not that deep. Just because you pound 6 cups of coffee a day doesn’t make you a better person. Just because you don’t consume any caffeine in a day doesn’t make you a better person. The reason why I made this video was not to talk about how cutting caffeine out of my life changed my life because quite frankly it didn’t. My life literally did not change at all. And there’s a very, very high chance that your life won’t change that much either if you quit consuming caffeine unless you genuinely believe that it will. I totally get why some people do it — want to be more “natural” and not take any unnecessary external substances, want to practice stoicism, want to engage in a dopamine detox — but if you’re considering quitting caffeine because it will change your life around, make your infinitely more productive, make you 2x more well-rested on a day-to-day basis, I’m sorry to say this, but quitting caffeine won’t do that for you. It’s really not that serious and it just isn’t that deep. Life is too damn short to unnecessarily deprive yourselves of something that you enjoy and that has not been proven to be incredibly harmful for your health. Go out there and enjoy your coffee.
