Churchill took down every UK road sign

In 1940, as Britain braced for a possible German invasion, Winston Churchill’s government ordered every road sign taken down across the country.
Direction posts, milestones, and even railway station signs were quickly removed or painted over. The goal? If Nazi forces landed, they’d have no idea where they were, which towns to head for, or how to navigate — buying precious time for British defenders.

It was part of a much bigger wave of anti-invasion preparations during the Battle of Britain. Locals sometimes got lost too, but it was seen as a necessary sacrifice. The signs stayed down until the immediate threat of invasion passed.
One simple but brilliant move to turn Britain into a confusing maze for any would-be invaders.
