Have You Heard What Supermarkets Are Doing…?
Former British Army Captain and AI warfare strategist David Newton reacts to reports of supermarkets introducing AI-driven dynamic pricing systems.
The concern?
Prices changing in real time depending on demand, behaviour, time of day… or even how urgently people need certain products.
Milk before the school run? More expensive.
Rush hour shopping? Prices increase.
Quiet periods? Prices drop again.
To be clear — Waitrose has publicly said it currently has “no plans” to introduce surge pricing through digital shelf labels.
However, the concern some people have is whether supermarkets could slowly normalise higher baseline prices over time… while presenting what should be the normal price as “special offers” or AI-driven “discounts”.
Some critics argue this could create the perception of savings, without customers realising the standard price has quietly increased over time.
David warns this could be the beginning of AI systems influencing everyday life in ways most people haven’t even considered yet.
Would you accept AI deciding how much you pay at the checkout?
