Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi Bareilvi, President of the All India Muslim Jamaat, said that New Year celebrations on the night of December 31 often involve loud noise, dancing, singing, and behavior that Islam does not allow. He said that, according to Islamic Sharia, such celebrations are wasteful and forbidden. He added that the Islamic New Year begins in the month of Muharram, not January. He also mentioned that in Hindu culture, the New Year starts in Chaitra. He said religious scholars strictly oppose parties involving dancing, singing, and extravagance to celebrate the New Year.
