The Staccatos
A car door slams shut and two pairs of feet dash across the asphalt parking lot, dodge around an XKE and a matched pair of M G's and end up at a Green Door.

The Green Door opens and the mod blonde in a glow of psychedelic colour and a pair of crazy shades slips into the darkness hand in hand with a guy in tails.

They push their way though a crowd covered with Carleton University ribbons and move out in front of the stage where five musicians are standing.

Vibrations - rock vibrations, Beatle vibrations, Rolling Stone vibrations circulate in the dark crowded room.

Guitar strings and drum skins quiver. Then The Staccatos sound, a weird sound, an exciting sound. The blonde dances slowly at first. Then faster. The crowd stirs and moves under the hypnotic spell.

There in the blue mist of cigarette smoke, among the pulsating lights, the mini-skirts, the heat, the clash of cymbals, students, lawyers, milkmen and electronic sounds, The Staccatos are home.

The Guess Who?
The red light went on. The director yelled and the microphone dropped into position. Half a dozen amplifiers started to hiss.

The static shook the studio. Then a rock sound bounced back and forth in the tile room, finally escaping into the mike, crackling through the cords and drifting across the country, east from Winnipeg, over the Great Lakes, through Quebec and Newfoundland.

It happens weekly. Every Thursday just about supper time The Guess Who's twin guitars, bass and drums fly across Canada.

It lasts a half hour. A half hour made up from practices, rehearsals, script assistance, technicians, directors, producers and four guys from Winnipeg.

Four guys who spend most of their week working on that half hour. Writing for it and rehearsing until every cameraman, writer, technician and stage hand knows the lyrics by heart.

The last notes are reaching St. John's now.
