HABITS for Clean Kitchen! Clean as you go method
KITCHEN CLEANING HABITS:
When you start cooking, if everything is messy, everything is scattered, you will very easily lose control and instantly feel stressed, so the first rule is to...
● Start with a clean kitchen - If at all possible, don’t start cooking until your kitchen is relatively clean. If you start cooking and your kitchen is already a disaster, you’ll just get depressed and throw up your hands in despair after cooking a meal. If you start with a clean slate, you’ll be more motivated to keep it clean.
● Cook more slowly. The biggest way, though, to minimize mess, is to cook more slowly. Keep everything you need ready before you turn the flame on. Cutting veggies beforehand is probably the most effective way to cook more neatly. Sometimes we multitask and are often trying to do too much at once and clean as you go is lost in the process and the clutter builds up very quickly, so go slow so that clean as you go is manageable.
● Have a Trash bowl or bag - Instead of throwing your food scraps onto the counter, it’s much more efficient to place them in a dedicated trash bowl or a colander. This way you don’t have to wipe up the food juice, and you can quickly dump the scraps all at once. An over door hanger rubbish bin is great way to collect all kitchen waste while cooking. Instead of walking over to the bin with handfuls of peelings or scraps (probably dropping some in the process) use a bowl on the counter where you work to consolidate all of your cooking waste. Always remember....Built up mess creates stress in your mind, demotivating you to do any further cleaning.
● Clean up spills ASAP - This is another one that we all know we should do, but neglect when we are in a hurry. The reality is, if you get to a spill as soon as possible, it will be so much easier to clean up. Dried-on gunk has to be soaked or scraped first, when it could have been cleaned up with a simple wipe.
● Develop good kitchen habits - A good general habit to form is to put things from where you picked after you have used it or get into the habit of putting things away as you go when you cook. Instead of leaving everything out on your counter, put things away as you use them. Don't leave until you're done cooking. By the end of it all, you’ll only have a bigger mess to clean. So take few additional steps to reach out to your pantry, rather than piling up stuff on your counter top.
● Clean as you go - There is a lot of rationale for the clean as you go method, which slowly but surely you will learn to adhere to. Here's how you can start.....If you find yourself with some free time in the kitchen, use it wisely! For example, if you’re waiting for a pot of water to come to a boil, instead of standing around, do a bit of cleaning. Start unloading the dishwasher. Put away cooking utensils that you’re done using. Wipe down the counters. You’ll be amazed at how much you can get done during the in-between times of cooking.
● Clean it, dry it, re-use it – To prevent a build-up of pots, pans, colanders, knives, mixing bowls etc start getting into the process of cleaning it as soon as you’re done with it. A quick scrub with soap and hot water, a hot rinse and a dry with a tea towel and it is ready to use again. Do it the Chef way!
● Keep counters clean - The more stuff on your countertops the harder it is to quickly clean them. You don’t have to be a minimalist and keep nothing on your countertops, just be sure you don’t go overboard. Just keep in mind the more stuff you have out the more you have to move.
● Carry a tea towel with you every where - You see chefs with a tea towel or several hanging from their apron strings because you need one all the time. For drying your hands, drying tools, a quick wipe down or for using in lieu of a oven mitt.
● Think one step ahead - At lunch i am already thinking about evening snacks I will serve my kids and dinner for toinght. This way i reduce stress by prepping some stuff ahead of time giving me more time to clean as I go while I am cooking.
● Create morning & night time routines - Building these habits into a morning routine and nighttime routine can help you stick with them.
One of the best things about working clean is that when you’ve finished cooking, the rest of the dishes and any jobs you have to do are fairly minimal. Your mind won’t linger over the mess in the kitchen as you share your hard work with your family and can actually enjoy every bit of it.
