F1 Race Penalties Explained - F101 ep. 2

Welcome back to TGSF1 and today we are continuing F101 - a series dedicated to explaining some of the jargon, rules and general points of interest for Formula one.

Today we will be talking about Penalties that can be dished out for violations during Sunday's race.

As we all know, Formula one is a high octane, extremely tense and very dangerous sport. For that reason, the FIA and Formula one have a set of rules and regulations that teams and drivers must stick to during a race to ensure the race happens as fairly as possible and as safely as possible.

Anyone bending or breaking the rules to achieve an advantage during the race, whether on purpose or accidentally can be given a penalty during the course of the race.

Penalties may be imposed on drivers for all sorts of offences from starting before the lights go out, speeding in the pitlane, causing an accident, blocking unfairly, driving dangerously, or ignoring flags of any colour.

Penalties are all dished out with the intentions of damaging a drivers overall race time and thus potentially moving them further down the order and damaging their finishing position and points total come the end of the race.
