Speaking in Beijing, Mohd Yunus remarked that India's seven northeastern states lack access to the sea, positioning Bangladesh as the "guardian of the sea" for the region. He further invited China to treat this area as a strategic "extension." He also dismissed the recent democratic movements in Bangladesh, claiming they were actually veiled attacks against India.

Adding fuel to the controversy, retired Bangladeshi Major General A.L.M. Fazlur Rahman suggested that if India were to retaliate against Pakistan for the recent Pahalgam terror attack—which claimed 26 lives in Jammu and Kashmir—Bangladesh should consider invading India's northeastern states.
