New Pamban Railway Bridge: A Modern Engineering Marvel Links India’s Past and Future
India is poised to celebrate a monumental achievement in infrastructure as Prime Minister Narendra Modi prepares to inaugurate the new Pamban Railway Bridge on April 6, 2025, during the festive occasion of Ram Navami. Stretching 2.05 kilometers across the turbulent waters of the Palk Strait, this cutting-edge structure—India’s first vertical lift railway sea bridge—replaces the iconic yet aging Pamban Rail Bridge, which connected mainland India to Rameswaram Island for over a century before its decommissioning in December 2022.
Built by Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) at a cost of approximately ₹535 crore, the new Pamban Bridge is an engineering triumph designed to meet the demands of the 21st century. Its centerpiece is a 72.5-meter vertical lift span that ascends 22 meters above sea level in just five minutes, enabling seamless passage for larger ships while allowing trains to cross at speeds of up to 75 kmph (50 kmph on the lift span). This is a dramatic improvement over the old bridge, where trains limped across at 10 kmph, taking 25-30 minutes to complete the journey. Now, the crossing takes under five minutes, heralding a new era of efficiency.
