VLADIMIR PUTIN can be assassinated with "a hammer to the head", according to a former CIA station chief in Moscow.

Daniel Hoffman said any plot to remove the Russian President is potentially lethal because they won't ask: "Hey Vladimir, do you want to leave?" Speaking to The Daily Beast, the American spy expert said it would happen "suddenly" and "he would die".

"Those who are going to do this will have to keep it a secret, so that Putin doesn't find them and kill them first," he said.

"It's going to happen suddenly. And he's going to die.

"No one will ask, 'Hey Vladimir, do you want to leave?

"No. It was a hammer blow to the head and he died.

"Or it's time to go to the sanatorium. They arrested him for it.

"That's what they're going to do."

Mr. Hoffman speculated that there could be three key figures behind the plot to remove the Russian president.

They include Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, Security Council head Nikolai Patrushev, and FSB Director Alexander Bortnikov.

It comes as General Kyrylo Budanov of Ukraine has speculated that an assassination plot might not be necessary as Putin "doesn't have a long life ahead" due to ill health.

Mr. Budanov said Ukrainian spies infiltrating the Kremlin made statements based on "human intelligence".

The health of the Russian President has been a matter of intense speculation for months.

He was seen clutching a table during a meeting with Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and earlier this month his legs appeared to buckle while attending an event in Moscow.

However, Michael Clarke, a colleague at King's College London, told Sky News earlier this month that despite Putin's attempts to "mummify himself", he thinks the former KGB officer is just a "hypocrite". .

He said: “On October 7, he will be 70 years old.

"He is known to have used Botox quite heavily, I always say he was trying to mummify himself while he was still alive - he took a lot of Botox.

"He moves around with doctors, is known to have a small group of doctors who are never far away, and it is said that he leaves regular meetings to go and consult with who's that.

“Honestly, I suspect that he is just a hypocrite.

"If he gets sick, or gets sick, that would be a way for Russia to say that the President has resigned and the war will now be prosecuted by Nikolai Patrushev - who is just as bad as he is."
