Sunday Speaker: Jordan Davis - Conceptual Engineering

In contemporary philosophy, conceptual engineering is the project of deliberately evaluating, revising, and improving our concepts in order to make our thinking, communication, and inquiry work better.

Instead of just asking “What does this concept mean?” (traditional conceptual analysis), conceptual engineering asks:
“Is this concept good? And if not, how should we fix it?” Conceptual engineering treats concepts as tools. Like any tools, they can: malfunction, mislead, distort reality, encode bias, or be poorly suited for new contexts.
So the job is not merely to describe how we use a concept, but to design better ones when needed.

Bio: Jordan Davis holds a bachelor's degree in Philosophy from the University of Central Oklahoma, and a master's degree in Philosophy from Colorado State University. His areas of focus and expertise are Classical and Formal Logic, Pragmatist Philosophy and thought (including Pragmatist Epistemology), and Conceptual Engineering. Jordan teaches and tutors regularly in Philosophy and logic, has his own TikTok channel, and he is a co-host on the Light of Reason podcast on YouTube.
