Brahms - Piano Concerto no.2 in B flat maior Op.83 (Schiff)
Brahms Piano Concerto no.2 in B flat major Op.83
- András Schiff
- Orchestra Age of Enlightenment
The Piano Concerto No. 2 in B♭ major, Op. 83, by Johannes Brahms is separated by a gap of 22 years from his first piano concerto. Brahms began work on the piece in 1878 and completed it in 1881 while in Pressbaum near Vienna. It took him three years to work on this concerto, which indicates that he was always self-critical. He wrote to Clara Schumann: "I want to tell you that I have written a very small piano concerto with a very small and pretty scherzo." Ironically, he was describing a huge piece. This concerto is dedicated to his teacher, Eduard Marxsen. The public premiere of the concerto was given in Budapest on 9 November 1881, with Brahms as soloist and the Budapest Philharmonic Orchestra, and was an immediate success. He proceeded to perform the piece in many cities across Europe.

0:00 Mov I - Allegro non troppo. My favourite movement. The solo of the natural horn in this start is just pleasant, and the piano following the horn is just pleasant too. After a while in (02:25) we listen to a theme that is similar with a funeral march, but, a powerful scale appers just after, and the piano is the back. (03:54), This is amazing. A beautiful oboe solo (05:03). A theme by the winds in D flat major (05:35). After a lot of thing the coda brings a felling that I can't even describe (17:05).
17:31 Mov II - Allegro appassionato. A scherzo. A lot of horns and agressive strings. It's perfect.
26:55 Mov III - Andante. A beautiful theme, i like the version in F sharp major in (33:49).
37:00 Mov IV - Allegretto grazioso. Beautiful theme. I really like the natural horn in the A minor parts like (39:42). Beautiful coda.
