Becoming a freelance graphic designer in 2026

After 12 years working as a designer, across in-house teams, design agencies, print design, digital design, and UI design, I found myself at a crossroads I didn’t plan for. From the outside, my design career looked stable. Internally, I knew I wanted more autonomy.

A couple of years ago, I started posting my graphic design work more consistently on Instagram. What began as simply sharing projects slowly turned into something bigger. I always knew that becoming a freelance designer was the long-term goal, but I didn’t feel ready to make the jump.

Fear played a big part in that hesitation.Fear of finding clients as a freelancer.Fear of inconsistent freelance income.Fear of not being able to pay rent while self-employed.

So I stayed in my full-time design role and kept postponing the decision.
Then I received an email letting me know I was being laid off, along with many others. In a tough job market for creatives, this should have been terrifying. But instead, I felt relief. The decision I’d been avoiding, transitioning from employee to freelancer, was suddenly made for me.

This is the beginning of my real freelance journey as a designer. I’m still learning, still figuring things out, and building a sustainable freelance business step by step. This isn’t a highlight reel; it’s an honest look at freelancing, self-employment, and creative careers in real time.
