In this chemistry video, children can learn about the differences among elements and compounds in a very simple way with several examples. Simply stated, elements consist of only one kind of atoms which can't be separated. Compounds consist of atoms of two or more elements bound together and can be broken into the simple types of matter by chemical means. Compounds have properties different from their constituent elements.

What’s an element?

Element: An element consists of only one kind of atom, cannot be broken down into a simpler type of matter by either physical or chemical means, and an element can exist as either atoms (e.g. argon) or molecules (e.g., nitrogen).

Difference between molecules and compounds?

Read it carefully: A molecule is when two or more elements are chemically bonded together.

A compound is two or more different elements chemically bonded together. Got it?

This may give you more clarity: a compound has two or more different types of elements bonded together. And there are 118 elements on the periodic table.

To have a compound, there need to be at least two of these elements. There are several compounds around us. The water you drink is made up of two hydrogen items and one oxygen atom. Hydrogen and oxygen are different elements that’s why water is a compound.

In this video, the difference between elements and compounds is very clearly defined. Kids just need to spend seven minutes to get the full lesson. A better way to understand it is to watch it repeatedly.
