Baby fingers

Babies reflexively suck on whatever is put in their mouth for the first few months. This helps them practice sucking until it becomes a learned skill. Then around 3-4 months they want to practice chewing. Everything that goes in their mouth gets chewed on. By doing this, they get to practice chewing for several months before starting solid foods where there is an expectation that they need to do something with the food before swallowing it. This means everything they put in their mouth gets chewed on. If you’re trying to do “suck training” exercises at this age, it can be very frustrating as many babies want to focus on chewing. We actually then want to use this new stage of development to our advantage and practice chewing, which helps carry over skills for sucking. This baby is just as the cusp of crossing from sucking to chewing. You can see both actions happening with one of my favorite toys for this age.
