Soon after, a man calling himself "The Strangler" began sending taunting letters to the police and media, claiming responsibility. Lucien Léger, a psychiatric nurse, was arrested and confessed under pressure but later recanted. Despite ongoing doubts about his guilt, he served nearly 41 years in prison, he longest sentence in French history at the time. The case remains one of France’s most haunting unsolved mysteries.
