Welcome back to another episode of Tidal Trekkers — the raw and real boat life adventure of a family of six chasing freedom across the Pacific.

In this extended, hour-long episode, we take you aboard for our first big solo passage as a family. No sailing lessons. No instructors. Just us, our new to us old budget boat, and the ocean.

We sail from Paihia in the Bay of Islands to Great Barrier Island, facing calm seas, sudden rain squalls, and 30-knot winds. Things break, things go right, and we learn — a lot. There’s lost fish, caught fish, mug cakes in the galley, and a whole lot of reality.

Our watermaker setup gets a walkthrough, dolphins swim alongside us for hours, and we arrive to a magic sunset before wrapping it all up with a deep and honest lessons learned debrief.

These are not lessons from a textbook. These are lessons from jumping into boat life head-first with our four boys, learning everything — from sailing to cooking at sea — on the go.

Our goal? To be ready to sail north to the pacific islands in just a few weeks. But… are we really ready?
