Wireframes are the first step of turning your design ideas into reality—but they don’t take any special skills or software. To make a great wireframe, all you need is a pencil and some paper.

The magic of wireframes is in their simplicity. A great wireframe is the most basic sketch you can imagine—without branding, imagery, colors, or copy. Working this way keeps you from wasting valuable hours (cha-ching!) on work that your client doesn’t like.

Great wireframes address what your product needs to accomplish. Though you may not have branding assets squared away, you can still get started on building UX flows by thinking about the placement of basic elements, like buttons and CTAs. Think of your wireframe as a blueprint, and these elements as building blocks.
