Andrei Tarkovsky's "Solaris" (1972) is an avant-garde film, and while this scene may be considered by some to contain "spoilers", the payoff from the film is not from the plot and events, but rather from visuals, dialogue, and sound which Tarkovsky uses to create an artistically vivid and beautiful film. Tarkovsky was also known for his use of silence in film.

"Ich ruf zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ" translates from German to "I call to you, Lord Jesus Christ". The use of Bach's music here reflects Kris Kelvin's existential search for meaning as well as Bach's search for God he expressed through this piece.

The role of Kris Kelvin is played by Donatas Banionis, who recently died on September 4, 2014 at the age of 90.
