How to use a bath transfer bench.
Hello, today I am going to teach you how to properly set up and use a bath transfer bench. Some people also call this a tub transfer bench. First of all I'd like to introduce myself, my name is Dawn. I'm a nurse as well as a safe patient handling specialist. I have been teaching safe patient handling for over 20 years. I have taught safe bath transfers to thousands of people in hospitals, nursing homes and home care settings across north america. Today we are going to compare 2 types of bath transfer benches, an older style and a newer style. Alright, lets get started. The first transfer bench I have here is the older style. You want to make sure you have it set up so that the bench is perfectly level. To use the bath transfer bench properly, simply back up to the edge of the bench until your knees touch the edge. Then sit down. Next, rotate your body while lifting your legs over the edge and into the tub. Now slide your body across the bench until you are seated in the correct location. You can now grab your shower wand and start bathing. So as you can see it is fairly easy to transfer into your tub or shower with this bench. There are a few things I don’t like about the older models though. They are a hard plastic, cold to the touch and the twisting and sliding can sometimes cause skin tears and be stressful on knee and hip joints. Now let look at a newer style bath transfer bench. This one is set up the same way so make sure it is level. This chair can rotate by pressing on this red lever so I have set up the chair to face into the room. Back up to the seat as shown before and sit down. Fasten the lap belt then push down on the lever to swivel. Once I’m facing forward, press the grey button in and then slide to the center of the tub. The things I really like about this bath transfer bench is that it is padded. The padded seat makes it much more comfortable and warmer to the touch. The padded armrests also give me a good sense of security. The swivel seat and slide function really make skin tears and joint stress a non issue. So which tub transfer bench do I like the best? I would have to say the newer style. It is a little more money but I think the additional features and comfort make it well worth it. https://youtu.be/apmdkWcnx8I https://youtu.be/BewarSS2B9g
