Ca2+ Independent cell - cell adhesion | Major molecule involved | mechanism | Functions | Disorders

Calcium (Ca²⁺) independent cell adhesion refers to the process by which cells attach to each other or to the extracellular matrix without requiring calcium ions for stabilization. This type of adhesion is mainly mediated by immunoglobulin superfamily cell adhesion molecules (Ig-CAMs), such as NCAM (Neural Cell Adhesion Molecule). These proteins play essential roles in immune responses, neuronal development, tissue organization, wound healing, and cell recognition. Unlike calcium-dependent adhesion molecules, their adhesive function remains active even in the absence of extracellular calcium.
