Kegels are important to prevent pelvic floor dysfunctions and problems! THESE IMPORTANT pelvic floor muscles prevent you from bladder leakage, leaking feces and gas! They also support your pelvic organs and prevent these organs from prolapsing (POP) or anything ‘bulging out of your vagina’ or rectum!

THE MOST IMPORTANT POINTS TO REMEMBER about doing KEGELS ARE:

1. KNOW the ANATOMY of the pelvic floor muscles - you need to know where these muscles are to contract them properly! VISUALIZATION IS IMPORTANT!
2. MIND BODY CONNECTION will increase the EFFECTIVENESS
3. THE SQUEEZE IN AND LIFT - how you are contracting s the key!! Analogies that may help: Visualize the “j” movement - sucking marble in from anus to pubic bone - or jellyfish motion For Men: ‘retract penis’ , ‘pull scrotum or testicles up and in toward your body or pubic bone area -
4. FULLY RELAX THE PFMs (pelvic floor muscles) to the bottom - ‘Let your pelvic drop’
5. PERFORM IN A COMFORTABLE POSITION WITH GOOD POSTURE so you can FEEL what you are doing!
6. Proper breathing pattern - umbrella breathing - contract with the exhale and release with the inhale
7. Progress with functional and core integration of the PFMs in your daily activities and routine

OVERACTIVE BLADDER/URGE URINARY INCONTINENCE/URGENCY: If you are PEEING all the time; find yourself doing the ‘PEE DANCE’ all the time you could have a condition called: BLADDER URGENCY, urge urinary incontinence (UUI) or OAB.

Some tips you can try to curb that ‘urgency’:

1. BLADDER RETRAINING
2. DISTRACTION TECHNIQUES
3. RELAXING the PELVIC FLOOR, hip, back and the whole body! - stretch and breath!
4. Avoiding any BLADDER TRIGGERS such as caffeine, alcohol, carbonated water, acidic foods - TRACK WITH A FOOD/VOID DIARY
5. Drink adequate water to avoid concentrated urine (this can trigger your bladder to void)
6. DESTRESS! - calm your body down
7. STRETCH - hips, upper back,
8. Learning how to ‘KEGEL’ properly to prevent leakage
