Old basketball trapped in perpetual motion

10 years ago we stumbled upon a basketball spinning in a local creek. We returned this year and found ANOTHER basketball spinning further downstream. Could it be the same one? Maybe, but no idea. We tried to free it but the current kept bringing it back to the same place. What are the physics behind what is happening here?
