Severe Weather - Eaglet Exposed During Storm - Snuggles & Cuddles - April 13, 2020 - NCTC Eagles
This footage captures family interaction before, during and after severe weather threatens the family. During the storm the eaglet to caught at the crib rails near 1 o'clock while Dad was at center nest; they are both forced to hunker down in place. The storm intensifies but moves thorough the area quickly. After the storm the sweet baby eaglet trembling, cold and soaking wet eventually moves and joins Dad at center nest. Dad provides comfort and warmth using his body and wings. All is well. Later Momma Bella flies in with a clutch of new bedding; good to see she weathered the storm well. Later Bella and her eaglet snuggle up nest center and there is some sweet interaction between Mommy and her baby eaglet. This eaglet hatched the morning of March 27, 2020 and is 18 days old and able to thermoregulate at this age, which was helpful during the storm!

About the NCTC Bald Eagle Nest
The resident bald eagles are named Bella (female) and Smitty (male). Bella and Smitty has been together since the fall of 2018. Bella replaced the long term resident female Belle in 2018; Belle was badly injured in a territorial dispute with other adult eagles. The resident male Smitty has been at this nest since 2011 when he replaced the long term resident male Liberty.
The NCTC Bald Eagle nest is located 75 miles from Washington, D.C. on the campus of The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services' National Conservation Training Center (NCTC). The campus is located at Shepherdstown, West Virginia. The nest and territory is prime real estate located about 1/4 mile from the Potomac River; rich in resources for an active bald eagle family and at times visitors/intruders challenge Bella and Smitty for their territory.
