Skywatch Weekly: Moon, Alignment, ISS, M44 & Aurora Watch

This week on Skywatch Weekly, we’re looking west after sunset for one of the most beautiful and beginner-friendly sky scenes of May: the waxing crescent Moon moving through the evening planetary lineup with Venus and Jupiter.
From May 17–23, 2026, the sky gives us science, mystery, and wonder — from bright planets and lunar phases to star clusters, aurora possibilities, human-made sky traffic, and the ongoing watch for the Blaze Star.
In this episode, Sunny from Nite Muse Media covers:
Western Planetary Lineup — Venus shines bright in the west after sunset, with Jupiter higher above it.
Moon Near Venus — watch the crescent Moon near brilliant Venus on May 18.
Moon Near Jupiter — the Moon moves near Jupiter around May 20.
Beehive Cluster M44 — a beautiful binocular target as the Moon passes nearby on May 21.
First Quarter Moon Near Regulus — the Moon reaches First Quarter on May 23, near Leo’s bright star Regulus.
Saturn & Mars Before Dawn — early risers can look low in the eastern sky before sunrise.
Jupiter’s Galilean Moons — Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto may be visible with binoculars or a small telescope.
Spring Galaxies — telescope users can look for M81 and M82, Bode’s Galaxy and the Cigar Galaxy.
Aurora & Space Weather Watch — northern viewers should keep an eye on solar activity and aurora forecasts.
What Was That Light? — ISS passes, satellites, aircraft, Starlink, meteors, and other moving lights in the sky.
Blaze Star Watch — T Coronae Borealis remains an active skywatch story, but not a guaranteed event.
Cultural & Astrology Note — Taurus to Gemini: grounding to curiosity.
Whether you’re watching from a porch, lakeshore, backyard, campsite, or dark-sky overlook, this week is a wonderful reminder that you don’t need to know the whole sky to begin.
Start with one thing.
Find Venus.
Find the Moon.
Find Jupiter.
Then come back tomorrow and see what changed.

Clear skies, Nite Side travelers.
