Qigong and Grief: Richard Clegg on Navigating Loss

Grief is an inevitable part of life, the loss and trauma isn't something that is easily overcome. We often think that death happens to an individual, when in reality, it happens to those who are left behind. In today's Qigong podcast, Richard Clegg discusses how he copes with grief and integrates the Zhineng Qigong practice to navigate his healing journey after losing his wife and grandson.

In the grieving process, Richard notes it's important to have a sense of true self and wholeness through such a difficult time. Oneness, a foundational aspect of Qigong, as it is well known that once separation occurs, suffering follows. The removal of judgement and ego is also needed for emotional healing after loss. In Qigong we are encouraged to return to a place of objectivity, this means allowing the natural ebb and flow of emotions and being kind to ourselves in the stages of grief.

Grief can flood you with emotions - and it's important to process them. Richard explains that in Qigong when emotions are stuck it creates heart-stones. These are emotional blockages that have the potential to create disease. Richard talks about how self-care and self love during a grieving period is essential. This should be a principle where you give yourself time and space to feel whatever emotion is present, rather than resist it. This will help raise your self awareness, further reinforcing your true sense of identity, as grief can be followed by isolation and abandonment - when times are dark, friends are few...

The Zhineng Qigong practice can help for trauma and grief. Richard uses the La Qi and Chen Qi method for grief. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (or TCM) the lungs are associated with grief. The Chen Qi method helps clear blockages and open the body’s internal energy pathways, allowing Qi to flow smoothly throughout. It offers profound benefits for the lungs while also strengthening the mind. Richard also used the 8 verses meditation, to soothe his nervous system returning to a state of calmness.

Grief might be a frame of reference as Richard explains, though Qigong for grief allows both ourselves and others the freedom to experience loss without judgment or rushing.
