On April 12th, 1861, Confederate forces opened fire on the Union garrison at Fort Sumter in South Carolina, launching the American Civil War. The bombardment lasted 34 hours before the Union troops surrendered. 🇺🇸 1945 – President Franklin D. Roosevelt Dies
On April 12th, 1945, President Franklin D. Roosevelt died of a cerebral hemorrhage at his retreat in Warm Springs, Georgia, just weeks before the end of World War II in Europe. Truman was immediately sworn in to lead the nation through its final push to victory.
💉 1955 – The Polio Vaccine Is Declared Safe
On April 12th, 1955, Dr. Jonas Salk's polio vaccine was officially declared safe and effective, marking one of the greatest medical breakthroughs of the 20th century.
