Storm Chasing Physician First Hand Response to Joplin Tornado
This was the grand rounds presentation I gave at Mayo Clinic in June, 2011, regarding my first person experience of the Joplin tornado. My chase partner, Dr. Robert Balogh, and I ended up chasing on the rear flank of the tornado with friends at Cloud 9 tours. Unfortunately, the destruction from Joplin was astounding taking 156 lives and damaging more than 12,000 structures. The toll included downstream infections (some rare) as a result of the destroyed structures. This is the single deadliest tornado in US history (since record keeping began formally in the 1950s). The focus of the presentation was about disaster preparedness and coordination with emergency management.
