Living your best life exploring the world is amazing, but safety is always a priority. Here are some quick tips for securing your hotel or Airbnb:

Before you book:

Research the neighborhood and street the accommodation is on: Is it well-lit and well-traveled at night? Does the building have security or any additional features so you can come in safely in case you were followed? 

Read reviews! Specifically to see if other solo travelers mention feeling safe.

For Airbnbs, choose a place with a Superhost & good communication. Things like outdoor cameras, single points of entry, or a condo in a doorman building are all safer options

Once you're there:

Don't advertise your room number! Keep it hush-hush. If anyone at check-in says it out loud, immediately insist they change it

Consider a portable door lock: this will give you an added sense of security 

Get to know the staff! Friendly faces can be a big help, as can being able to identify anyone giving you creepy vibes

Trust your gut! If something feels off, ask to be moved to a different room.

Lie: If anyone asks where you are staying or if you're traveling alone, lie!

Bonus tip: Let someone back home know your itinerary and check-in times.
