Ács to Komárom, Hungary : Sicily to Ukraine by camper van part 70

In early June 2013 the Danube, along with other rivers in northern Europe, flooded. On 8 June 2013 and having transited through Győr I attempted to cross the Danube but the crossing there was down - and according to the Tomtom satellite navigation device, the nearest crossing was at Vienna. Rather than go back on myself and not wanting to take the risk of having to go as far to the south east as Budapest, I chose to wait at a McDonalds car park on the Hungarian M19 motorway close to Ács and Bábolna.

Staying the day in McDonalds allowed me to catch up on some work, see what was happening in the world and have a little walk out although admittedly a McDonalds next to a motorway service point in Hungary does not really offer a great deal to see. Of course I could have got on my bicycle and gone to see the flooded Danube but I did not think of that then!

Here I take the van towards Komarom from the motorway service area and we can see some of the north Hungarian countryside and feel some of the holes in the road at the same time! Whilst driving I discuss the flooding on the Danube as well as mentioning the earthquakes in the eighteenth century which destroyed the town of Komarom.

The city of Komárom was formerly a separate suburban village called Újszőny. In 1892 Komárom and Újszőny were connected with an iron bridge and in 1896 the two towns were united under the name Komárom.

The centre was split by the newly created border of Czechoslovakia in 1920 following the Treaty of Trianon in which Hungary lost two thirds of its territory creating a sizeable Hungarian minority in Slovakia. The Czechoslovak (Slovak) part is now Komárno, Slovakia. I discuss some of the historical consequences of the Treaty of Trianon as I drive north to the river.

Komárom and Komárno are connected by two bridges: The iron bridge and a newer lifting bridge. The two towns used to be a border crossing between Czechoslovakia (later Slovakia) and Hungary, until both countries became part of the Schengen Area, resulting in all immigration and customs checks to be lifted on 12 December 2007.
