This is the Synology DS1525+—fully loaded with a 10GbE network card, extra RAM, NVMe SSD cache, and 5× 12TB Synology HAT300 drives—put through a real-world SMB speed test to answer the only question that matters: how fast does it move big files? In this video I show the exact setup, sanity checks, and copy tests (write and read), then share sustained throughput numbers you can actually compare to your workflow.
What you’ll see in this video
• Quick system walk-through: DS1525+ chassis, RAM upgrade, 10GbE NIC, and NVMe cache status in DSM.
• Test method: 100GB folder of large video clips over SMB, clean OS cache between runs, same client, same share.
• Write test (client → NAS): initial burst, sustained plateau, and why that matters for editing and ingest.
• Read test (NAS → client): where NVMe cache helps repeated reads and preview scrubs.
• Real-world translation: thumbnails, proxies, and exports that happen in minutes—not coffee breaks.
• Responsible close-out: the 3-2-1 backup rule you should follow even if your NAS is blazing fast.
Why 10GbE + NVMe cache matters
If you’re moving multi-gigabyte media, working with shared projects, or juggling proxies and renders, the network is your second storage bus. A 10-gig lane paired with a properly configured volume and NVMe cache can make pulling media feel close to an internal SSD pool—especially on repeated reads. That means less waiting, more editing, and faster delivery.
Build details (linked below)
• NAS: Synology DS1525+
• Drives: 5× HAT300 12TB (official Synology HDDs)
• Cache: NVMe SSD (read/write cache enabled in DSM)
• NIC: 10GbE upgrade card
• RAM: Memory expansion for heavier workloads
• Client: 10GbE workstation on the same switch/VLAN, jumbo frames end-to-end
