Andrew Gordon & Jon Maturan react to and review The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023), the colorful animated adventure from Illumination and Nintendo that brings one of gaming’s most iconic franchises to the big screen. Packed with references, humor, and high-energy action, the film delivers a love letter to Mario fans old and new.
Chris Pratt (Guardians of the Galaxy, Jurassic World) voices Mario, a Brooklyn plumber who is transported into the magical Mushroom Kingdom and must step up as a hero. Alongside him is his brother Luigi (Charlie Day — It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Pacific Rim), who ends up captured by the villainous Bowser, voiced by Jack Black (School of Rock, Kung Fu Panda). Meanwhile, Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy — The Queen’s Gambit, Furiosa) is reimagined as a capable and battle-ready leader who helps train Mario for the challenges ahead.
The film is filled with standout moments, including the fan-favorite Rainbow Road kart sequence, the nostalgic Donkey Kong arena battle featuring Donkey Kong (Seth Rogen — Superbad, Pineapple Express), and Bowser’s surprisingly heartfelt (and hilarious) musical number “Peaches.” With tons of Easter eggs pulled straight from decades of Nintendo history, the movie blends action, comedy, and classic platforming vibes into a fast-paced adventure.
