International condemnation mounts as Israel escalates airstrikes in Syria, BUT US

Syria has strongly condemned Israel’s recent airstrikes on Damascus and southern regions, calling them a "blatant violation" of sovereignty and international law. The attacks, which struck government buildings, civilian infrastructure, and areas near the presidential palace, injured civilians and caused significant damage. Syria’s Foreign Ministry accused Israel of systematic escalation and destabilization, vowing to defend its territory by "all legitimate means" under international law.

Interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa, in a televised address, assured Syria’s Druze minority of protection, declaring, “We are not among those who fear war.” His defiant stance came as Israel vowed to destroy Syrian forces attacking Druze communities in Sweida, where clashes have raged for days. Israel claims its strikes defend the Druze, a religious minority also present in Israel, but Damascus and allies view the intervention as aggression.

The UN joined the condemnation, with Secretary-General António Guterres labeling the strikes "escalatory" and urging restraint. A fragile ceasefire was announced, but UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric expressed skepticism, noting past truces had collapsed. Disturbing social media footage showing Druze captives abused by armed fighters further complicated the crisis.

Turkey, via intelligence channels, warned Israel against fueling instability, while halting trade and recalling its ambassador over what it called Israel’s "genocidal" actions in Gaza. US officials, including Special Envoy Tom Barrack, engaged in diplomacy, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio cautiously optimistic about de-escalation. However, they refused to condemn Israel.

As global calls for accountability grow, Syria demands UN action to halt Israel’s "repeated violations," underscoring a volatile regional crisis with no swift resolution in sight.
