OpenSCAD Gear Generator – From Script to Working Gears

In this video I take a look at designing and 3D printing custom spur gears using OpenSCAD!

Starting from a simple procedural gear script, I gradually improved the design into a reusable parametric gear generator with features including:

Adjustable tooth count
Module-based sizing
Optional hubs
One-sided or centered hub mounting
Grub screw holes
Lightening holes
Adjustable backlash for smoother meshing
Fully customizable dimensions

I then exported and printed a pair of gears — a 24 tooth and 15 tooth gear — to test how well the generated profiles mesh in real life.
The results turned out surprisingly good for an approximate printable tooth form!

This project shows how powerful OpenSCAD can be for mechanical CAD work, especially when creating reusable parametric designs for 3D printing and prototyping.

Perfect for:

Robotics
Gear reductions
DIY mechanisms
Educational projects
Arduino projects
Motion systems
Hobby engineering

OpenSCAD makes it possible to generate custom gears in seconds simply by changing a few parameters.
